A total of 500 young men played on Carlisle Indian School’s varsity but many of them seldom, if ever, got into a varsity game. Those young men were relegated to the Second or Third teams to get playing time. Sadly, those games received scant coverage from newspapers and school publications.
Most students played on the intramural teams. The various shops, debating clubs, and even the band fielded teams. Experienced varsity players gained coaching valuable experience tutoring these players. Those games rarely received coverage, even in the school newspaper.
Oneidas played key roles on the Carlisle team from the beginning in 1893 through the end in 1917 and would have if the 1918 season had been played as it was scheduled. Oneidas were integral to Carlisle’s success.
